The vicar of All Saints’ will commence a series of short “ Bible talks ” in All Saints Church on Monday at 7,30 p.m. The first of these addresses will be taken on Monday, the 4th inst., and will be open to all. Requests have been made for these “ talks ” so it is hoped many will avail themselves of the opportunity given.

The services in the local Methodist Church will be conducted to-morrow by the Rev. T. Coatsworth. In the morning the addresses on “The Shepherd’s Psalm ” will be continued. The subject at the evening service will be “ Redemption.” Mr Coatsworth will also conduct a service at Himatangi at 2.30 p.m.

The members of the local Horticultural Society will hold a social gathering in the Masonic Hall on Monday evening next. The President will be pleased to see every member present. The gentlemen will be charged one shilling to cover necessary expenses, and the ladies will bring a basket. We are asked to explain that every member, whether male or female, is entitled to bring along a friend. A pleasant evening is anticipated. At the Police Court, Palmerston North yesterday, before Messrs Culver and Graham, J’s.P., Sam Bevan, a half caste, was charged on remand Irom Otaki, with on August 9th at Foxton, with intent to defraud, obtaining from Robert Burnett the sum of £1 ros by means of a valueless cheque. Accused pleaded guilty and was fined and ordered to make restitution of 30s to Mr Burnett. Seven days was allowed in which to find the money.

The services to-morrow at All Saints’ will be 8 a.m. Holy Communion, xx a.m. Matins and Holy Communion, 7 p.m. Evensong and sermon. The collections throughout the day will be in aid of the “ Diocesan General Church Fund, which is the means of supplying the backblocks with clergy. The Archdeacon of Wellington writes as follows; ‘ ‘ The collections made last year exceeded in their total those of any previous year. I trust there may be a similar advance in those of this year. It was with the utmost difficulty that the requirements of the year were made to correspond with the estimated receipts. Any serious falling under any one of the heads ol estimated receipts would mean an income falling short of what is required to fulfil the Synod’s obligations. The vital statistics for Foxton tor August were : —Births, 2 ; marriages, 3 ; deaths, nil. Mr Isaacs, Inspector of Technical Education, has been inspecting the local State School this week.

The services to-morrow in St. Mary’s Church will be conducted at 8.30. a.m. by the Rev. Father Kelly. The Rev. S. Barnett will lecture on occultism in the Masonic Hall, on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. The Attendance Shield at the local State School was won this week by Standard 111. with an average attendance of per cent.

A special meeting of the Borough Council will be held on Tuesday evening, to affix seal to debentures for Beach Road Loan of to arrange scale of prices for Town Hall and any other business in connection with Town Hall.

The services at the Presbyterian Church to-morrow will be conducted, both morning and evening, by the Rev. W. J. Comrie of Wellington. Mr Comrie is treasurer of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, and besides being a distinguished office bearer, is a very eloquent preacher. The Secretary of the New Zealand Cricket Council has received advice that it will be impossible for the English cricket team which is visiting Australia during the coming season, to extend its tour to New Zealand. The lecturette to be delivered by Dr. Mandl at the local literary and debating society’s meeting next Tuesday night, is open to the public. The subject is “natural selection” and should attract a large gathering. There is no charge for admission. Mr John Brodie, Mayor of Miramar, will be a candidate for Wellington East at the forthcoming general election. The other candidates for this seat are Mr D. McLaren, M.P. (Labour), Mr A. R. Atkinson and Dr Newman (Opposition), and F. G. Bolton (Government). Andrew Todd, aged 71 years, committed suicide in Christchurch yesterday morning. His behaviour had been peculiar, and a doctor was called in. The doctor went away to make arrangements to have the man transferred to a mental hospital, and on returning found that Todd had hanged himself. A child named Irene Dolsie McCabe died at the Auckland hospitial yesterday as the result of scalds. The mother of the child stated at the inquest that she was lifting a pot of boiling soup off the fire and accidentally spilt some on the baby who was playing with a toy on the floor.

One of Palmerston’s oldest citizens, Mr William Henry Eyre, passed away at his residence yesterday morning. The late Mr Kyre, who was 86 years of age, leaves a widow and a family of six to mourn their loss. His three sous are Messrs R. Eyre (Watson and Eyre), T. and W. Eyre ; and three daughters, Mrs H. Collins (Nelson), Mrs H. N. Vivian (Palmerston North), and Mrs T. Collis (Palmerston North.) Deceased arrived in the Dominion about 50 years ago.
