PAWELKA.
The reticence shown by the police in connection with the escaped prisoner Pawelka has resulted in the almost entire absence of any “Pawelka” news iu the newspapers. Yesterday, however, a Palmerston Times reporter, who set out to investigate, discovered that several residents of Ashhurst have become somewhat nervous as the result of “ information received,” and in consequence, on Thursday evening extra police were despatched to Ashhurst, whilst two constables were also sent to Longbum.
A well known Ashhurst citizen is of the opinion that the contention of the police that Pawelka is still iu Wellington is most absurd, aud he added “Pawelka is much nearer this district than most people believe.” Asked as to where the Ashhurst residents had received their “reliable information,” the gentleman in question said he was uot at liberty to divulge anything further.
