A WELLINGTON TRAGEDY.
A man named John William Doug died in his bed early on Monday morning, at 17, Sage’s Dane, off Tory street, Wellington. An inquest was ordered as a matter of course, and the autopsy, conducted by Dr. Fyffe, discovered a Iraclure of the skull on the right side of the head above the ear. in view of this the inquest was not gone on with, the only evidence taken being as to identification of the body merely.
It appears that Dong had been drinking, and some time prior to 4 o’clock on Monday morning something happened in the back yard of the premises, as a result 01 which Eoug was carried up to his bed. He died at 4 o’clock yesterday morning as the result of injuries alleged to have been received in the back yard. Whether his skull was fractured from a blow or by a heavy fall resulting from a blow, is not known.
Consequent upon inquiries made Detective-Sergeant Mclllveuy and Detective Cameron arrested a man named William Francis Dowmau, a labourer, on a charge that he did unlawfully kill John William Dong. This is the charge which is familiarly known as manslaughter, but it is open to the police to prefer the major charge ot murder should it be discovered that the circumstances warrant it.
ACCUSED REMANDED.
Wellington, Aug. 22,
William Francis Dowman was charged at the Magistrate’s Court with having unlawfully killed John William Dong, on Saturday night. Dowmau was remanded until the 30th. Bail was refused. Deceased Dong left a widow and two young children.
