THE SAND DUNES.
DR. COCKAYNE’S RESEARCHES. Dr. Cockayne has carried out on behalfofthe Government an investigation of the sand dunes throughout New Zealand, and his report, which runs to 70 foolscap pages with many illustrations, has been presented to Parliament. It deals with the geology and botany of the dunes, and method of reclamation. We possess, according to Dr. Cockayne, more than 300,000 acres of sand, the greater part of which is not only worthless, but a constant menace to the surrounding fertile land. This great tract could be rendered harmless, and in large measure improved, and the experience of other countries suggests that dune reclamation should be regarded as a work for the State. The most that private individuals could do v is to make their holdings secure lor the time being. The Government should proceed with great caution, but should an experiment be made in afforestation or other methods of reclaiming the dunes, Dr. Cockayne would recommend for the purpose the dunes near Devin, or those near Woodhill, Auckland.
