FOOTBALL.

FOXTON 3 v. LEVIN 3

What was undoubtedly the best game seen locally tor some time past was played on the racecourse on Saturday between Foxton and Levin - Wanderers. The game ended in a draw, Levin getting a penalty goal and Foxton scoring a try. The Levin Club was represented by their strongest fifteen and, whilst Foxton put a good team in the field it would certainly have been strengthened had Joe, Dunn and W. Robinson been available. The visitors rely on the play of their backs to win matches and Foxton on their forwards. Saturday’s struggle was between a good back team and a good forward team, and when the whistle sounded time honours were even. In the first spell Levin had all the best of it and several good displays of passing among their backs were given. They looked like scoring on several occasions but were prevented by Foxton’s excellent collaring. The second half was all in favour of the home team, whose forwards kept the ball down and play was practically the whole time in Levin’s 25. Before the commencement of the match one well-known football enthusiast —he was not an ardent supporter of either team was asked his opinion on how the game would end. He replied “Oh, Scia Scia will hook the ball in the scrum and it will get to the Levin backs and that will be the end of it.” This prognostication, however, was altogether wrong as the Foxton hookers invariably beat their opponents for the ball in the scrum, and after the first spell the Levin backs did not get opportunities to get going. Levin kicked off, the ball bouncing out of touch well into Foxton’s 25. From the line out the blue lorwards worked play to the centre ot the field, where it remained for some time, gradually working into the visitor’s 25. Here Wauklyn got possession and punted high but the ball went over the line and Levin forced. At the drop-out a Levin player got in front and a scrum Was ordered, from which Hopa broke away and carried play into Foxton’s territory, where an infringement relieved. The free kick was smothered and the ball went into touch-in-goal. From the drop-out there were exchanges of kicks between the backs, play eventually settling near the centre of the field. Here Levin was awarded a tree kick and Nepia Winiata placed a fine goal. It was a really splendid kick from a few yards inside half-way. Levin 3 Foxton 0 Shortly after the kick-off Levin got a passing rush going, which was spoiled through Heta knocking on a pass from Nepia Winiata. From the scrum another passing rush was started and a good chance of scoring was lost through Martin Winiata passing forward. From an exchange of kicks between the backs Martin Winiata kicked too hard and Furrie forced. Hopa got possession from the dropout and alter a short run took a pot at goal but the ball went wide and Foxton forced. Foxton forwards headed by Reihana now took play well into Levin’s territory, but the attack was only temporary, and the blacks forced the home team into their own 25’s, where, from a penalty for obstruction, Nepia Winiata made a good but ineffective shot at goal. Foxton forced. The scene ot operations was now transferred, by good forward play, into black’s 25’s. A good scoring chance was prevented by a fine line kick by Stuckey. Levin now attacked, and Shamrock saved with a fine kick, which found the line well down the field. Foxton forwards pressed, but a free kick relieved, and from the return the Levin backs started a passing rush. Lewer got possession, but kicked too hard, and a force relieved the home team. From some give and take play, a Foxton back punted high, and Martin Winiata took a fine mark. Nepia Winiata made a very good attempt at goal, the ball going just outside the post. Foxton had charged before the ball was down, and another kick was awarded, but it was unsuccessful. A few minutes later the whistle sounded for halftime, with olay in Levin’s 25’s. Levin 3 Foxton 0

From the commencement of the second spell Foxton attacked, and had Levin penned in their own 25’s for some time. There was a series of line outs and scrums, and eventually Foxton was awarded a free kick. The ball was punted high, but went over the line, and

Levin forced. From the drop-out Levin attacked, and play was transferred to Foxton’s 25’s, where a free kick relieved. The Foxton forwards, headed by Bowe, took the ball into Levin’s 25’s, where Furrie got possession, but was pushed out near the corner. From the line-out the ball was knocked on, and a scrum was ordered. Haeana broke away from the scrum with the ball and forced his way over the line. He took the kick himself, and although he made a good attempt, failed to find the uprights. Foxton ... ••• 3 Levin 3 Foxton continued to press, and from a free kick for offside play, Haeana had a shot, but the ball went wide. A little later Royal was conspicuous, and as a result play was taken close to Levin’s line, where a scrum was ordered, Foxton was awarded a free kick for a Levin player rabbiting. Reihana made a poor attempt. At this stage the Foxton forwards were getting all over their opponents. Play was for some time on the line near Levin’s goal line, but eventually Hopa was instrumental in taking the ball to the centre of the field. With twenty minutes to go, Wanklyn got a nasty kick on the knee and had to retire, his place being taken by Matthews. The play was now right on the corner near Levin’s goal line, and Foxton were within an ace of scoring on several occasions. Once W. Cook got over, but was called back for going out of touch. From a scrum a little later, Furrie almost got over, and a series of scrums and line-outs followed. Foxton was awarded a free kick, and the ball was punted high, but went over the line, and Martin Winiata forced. From a scrum in front of the goal W. Cook got possession, and cutting in, was collared just on the line. In the last minute, from a line-out, the Levin backs got possession, and what looked like an almost certain score was saved by Matthews collaring Nepia Winiata high, thus spoiling his pass to Lewer, who over-ran the ball, which went out near the corner. The whistle sounded time. Foxton 3 Levin-Wanderers 3 Dr Adams refereed.
