THE TOWN HALL.

At last night's Council meeting a telegram was read from the Secretary for the Wellington Exhibition Commissioners, offering 140 cane bottom and 260 wood chairs, lately used in connection with the Exhibition, at 5s 3d each. The Town Clerk said that at the request of the Mayor he had rang uo Wellington and ascertained that the wholesale price of the chairs offered was 6s 3d and to this had to be added the cost of putting them together, say, fourpence per chair, Cr Carter pointed out that the freight on these chairs would be fairly heavy. Cr Speirs mentioned that he was going to Wellington the following morning and if the Council desired he would go and inspect the chairs. Councillors agreed that it would be a good thing to leave the matter in Cr Speirs’ hands, and it was decided on the motion of Cr Gibbs, seconded by Cr Carter, that the purchasing of the 200 wood bottom chairs as offered to the Council be left in the hands of Cr Speirs with power to purchase. Cr Gibbs said that if Cr Speirs offered 4s 6d each it would probably be accepted. APPLICATIONS FOR DATES. The Secretary of the Foxtou Presbyterian Church made application for the Hall on October nth and 12th for a children's carnival. Cr Coley moved and Cr Stewart seconded, that owing to the uncertainty ot the date of completion of Hall the Council are unable, at present, to grant dales, but will advise later. Cr Gibbs said that if possible the dates asked for should be set aside as requested. He understood however, that the dates could not be finally fixed owing to the uncertainty of date ot completion. The Mayor said that if possible the dates asked for would be granted, and the motion was carried. MR lumsdkx s application.

Mr P. Lum.ien, proprietor of the Mauawatu Hotel, applied for permission to run a light wire from the hall to the Manawatu Hotel. The object of the wire, he stated, was to give patrons of the hall, who, during the interval, are also patrons of the Manawatu Hotel, notification that the curtain would rise again in two minutes time. This was done bv ringing an electric bell in the bar. By doing so members of the audience who had gone out during the interval would receive notification of the time the curtain would rise and would therefore be in their seats again in time. He mentioned that similar wires were used in Wellington and Christchurch. It was decided on the motion of Cr Carter, seconded by Cr Adams, that the permission asked for by Mr Lumsden for wire from Town Hall be granted. PIANO FOR HAU„ Messrs Millar and Thompson wrote in reference to supplying a piano for the hall. They suggested different makes and forwarded quotations. It was decided to leave the matter over for the present. Several matters in connection with the hall were dealt with in committee. It was decided to hold a special meeting on Monday evening next, to deal with hall matters, including purchase of piano, opening night, etc.
