A DREADFUL TRAGEDY.

MURDER AND SUICIDE. Dunedin, August 4. A dreadful tragedy is reported from Tuapeka west. Thomas Colehan, farmer, aged thirty, shot his wife through the head with a pea rifle, killing her instantly. He then committed suicide by shooting himself. No cause is assigned for the act. The Star’s Lawrence correspondent wires : Colehan was about 31, and his wife, whose maiden name was Ritchie, six years younger. Colehan was the sou of a lady who kept the Saratoga Hotel at Waitati for many years. It is alleged that Colehan was given to intemperance, and when the worse for liquor indulged in fits ol temper. It is feared that when in one of these fits he committed the sad deed now reported. Appareutlv Colehan and his wife bad lived on the best of terms. They were only married towards the end of last year.
