DEBATING SOCIETY.

There was a good attendance of members at the weekly meeting of the local Literary and Debating Society on Tuesday night. The Rev Mr Aitken occupied the chair. The subject for debate was: “ Should Asiatics be excluded irom New Zealand ?” The leader of the negative side of the debate failed to put in an appearance, and his absence was adversely criticised. Mr Claris volunteered to fill the gap. Mr Rough opened in the affirmative, and set forth various reasons in support of his side, dealing particularly with the Chinese. He was ably supported by Mr Kellow and the Rev Mr Aitken. Messrs Claris. Jno. Ross, Chrystall and the Rev Coatsworth battled for the negative. The meeting decided in favour of the negative. Next Tuesday night a mock banquet will be held, which should attract a large attendance of the public.
