SOCIAL.
The members of the local Literary and Debating Society entertained their lady friends at a social in the Presbyterian Hall on Tuesday evening last. There was a fair attendance present and the vice-president (Rev Mr Aitken) extended a welcome to the ladies. A concert programme was submitted and much appreciated. The following contributed items: Pianoforte selection, Miss Speirs ; vocal items by Mrs Wrigley, Misses Aitken, Signall, Messrs Chrystall, Hornblow, Claris, humorous reading by the Chairman, recitations by Messrs Claris and Hornblow, banjo solo and song, Mr Knewstubbs. Most of the items were encored. Two members attempted a duet in order to fill up a gap in the programme, but their voices instead of harmonising created a most frightful discord, ihe accompanist, after several attempts to put them on the right track, was overcome with amusement and had to abandon her task. The singers (?) failed to even negotiate the first verse, and, what they did sing was entirely foreign, so far as the tune was concerned, to the song. Anyhow, they were rewarded by a hearty round of applause in lieu of other trophies from the vegetable kingdom which 'they richly deserved. Some of the members related stories. Refreshments were provided and handed round by the young men. The function, on the whole, was most enjoyable and the “boys” richly deserved the cheers which the ladies accorded them.
