AN ACTRESS ARRESTED.

ALLEGED BREACH OF ENGAGEMENT. LARGE WINNINGS AT THE race:s. Melbourne, July it. The news that an actress had been arrested in the city created an inquisitive excitement beyond theatrical circles yesterday. Proceedings recently were taken by Messrs Denton, Bode and MacKenzie, theatrical managers ot London, against Kathleen Starling to recover ,£2OO for alleged breach of contract. Application on Wednesday last was made in Sydney, before Mr Justice Pring, for a writ of capias, as defendant, who was a member of the Gay Gordons Company had taken her passage tor London in R.M.S. Orsova. Before the writ could be executed she left for Melbourne by Friday’s express, arriving here on Saturday, Mr Stanley Lewis (instructed by Messrs Morgan and Fyffe) yesterday applied to Mr Justice Cussen for the issue of a writ of capias on the ground that defendant was about to leave the State, and unless she were held to bail, plaintiffs’ action would be defeated. The affidavits set out the facts, stating that defendant had been engaged in London to come to Australia under contract as a member of the Gay Gordons Company, under the management of Messrs Clarke and Meynell. It was added that since coming to Australia defendant had won a considerable sum of money at horse racing and had determined to break her agreement to perform further in the Australian States. An order was issued by direction of the court that defendant be held until she gave security for a sum of ,£7O. Miss Starling later in the day was arrested at the Grand Hotel by the sheriff’s officer, but subsequently the security ot ,£7O was paid over by her solicitors, Messrs Blake and Riggall, and she was released upon that bail. (When the court met next day it was announced that the matter had been settled by arrangement and that Miss Starling had left for England.)
