SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The ordinary meeting of the local State School Committee was held on Thursday night. Present : —Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Betty (secretary), Henderson, Hunt, Hussey and Read. Formal correspondence was read from the Education Board re Arbor Day and copy of extract from N.Z. Gazette re incidental expenses of school committees, average daily attendance and certificates for secondary instruction. The Chairman’s reported that tree-planting had been carried out in the school grounds under the supervision of the headteacher. Shrubs, etc., had been purchased at a cost of £lO. The Chairman action in respect to the trimming of trees overhanging from Native Cemetery was endorsed. Committeemen expressed the opinion that the caretaker had carried out the work very satisfactorily. It was reported that certain leakages in the roof of the school were receiving attention.

The head teacher reported that the average weekly attendances for past month were : —284’6, 296, 297, and 262; the average for the whole period was zSq’g out of an average roll number of 316. The present roll number is 313, The trees procured by the committee have been planted by the boys on the ridge on the north side of the play ground. Some glazing needed doing and a new Ensign was required. —The report was adopted and Mr Read was authorised to attend to the window and it was decided to again make application to the Board fora new Ensign. It was decided to write thanking Messrs Rose and Coley and Bock for gifts of soil for tree planting. It was decided to erect a new fence where the recent planting had been done and also at the rear of the old school residence. The work to be done by the caretaker to the satisfaction of Mr Hunt. Accounts were passed for payment. Messrs Procter and Read were appointed visitors for the ensuing mouth.
