PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.
The annual congregational meeting ot the above church was held last night. The Rev G. K. Aitken presided over a fair attendance of members and adherents. After devotional exercises, the secretary presented the balancesheet, to the end of the financial year, June 30th, which showed a marked increase in the voluntary contributions over previous years, accounted for m a great measure by the adoption of the envelope system, The report dealt with various matters, including the erection of a Sunday school, upon which a debt remained of odd. Special mention was made of the assistance rendered by the Ladies’ Social Guild, the erection ot a tablet in the church to the late Rev. Mr Duncan, and other matters. The report was favourably commented upon and adopted. The Rev Mr Aitken spoke of the spiritual side of the church’s work which appeared to be very satisfactory. The Sunday school report was very encouraging from all points. The report of the Ladies’ Guild disclosed the fact that meetings had been held monthly, and through their efforts new windows had been erected in the church. The following committee was elected for the ensuing period : Messrs Claris (secretary), Parkes (treasurer), Jno. Ross, McCall, Gibbs, T. Henderson and A. Yates. Votes of thanks were passed to the Sunday school teachers, choirmaster and choir, secretary and treasurer and organists. Mrs Wrigley was appointed organist, and Mrs Claris assistant organist. Appreciative reference was made to the faithful manner in which the minister had discharged his duties, and the hope was expressed that the executive committee would take steps to have Tiakitahuna added to the Palmerston charge, in order that Mr Aitken could spend more time in Foxton. Mr Aitken thanked the congregation for its sympathy and .support. A lengthy discussion took place upon a resolution passed by the managers re a special effort to liquidate the debt on the Sunday school building. It was pointed out that over had already been subscribed within the church. It was agreed to endorse the managers’ suggestion that a carnival be held about the nth and 12th October, and that application be made tor the hall for these dales. It was decided to hold a special meeting on Wednesday evening next to make final arrangements as to details. After other minor matters were discussed the meeting closed with the Benediction.
