ELSIE HOLLAND’S DEATH.

O’SHAUGHNESSYS’ arrested. Auckland, July 17. A sensational sequel to the death of Elsie Holland on the night of June 13th at the house in First avenue, Kingsland, took place to-day, when three persons were arrested and taken to the lock-up on a charge of having murdered the deceased girl. The prisoners are James Edward O’Shaughnessy, his wife, Martha Jane O’Shaughnessy (formerly Mrs Maxwell), and the latter’s daughter, Mrs Hartley. The arrests were carried out by Chief Detective Marsack and six of his staff, and so quietly was the scheme of arrest carried out that even some hours after the successful conclusion of the drama it was unknown except to a comparative few in the immediate vicinity of the O’Shaughnessy’s house. At the inquest on Miss Holland the medical evidence was to the effect that death was due to the results of an illegal operation.

Cautious and continuous inquiries by the detectives led up to to-day’s triple arrest. A thorough search of the shop and house tenanted by the O’Shaughnessys’ took place after the removal of the prisoners, but the authorities decline to say whether any fresh evidence was discovered. The accused will be brought up before the magistrate to-morrow, when a remand will be applied for. It is understood that other arrests may follow, and that the Crown Prosecutor now has charge of the case.
