WELLINGTON MEETING.
Excellent weather prevailed for the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting, and as a consequence the attendance was good. The totalisator receipts totalled £i6,6q6, which represents an increase of .£5,644 on the corresponding day last year, which is probably due to the absence of bookmakers this season. The following are the results of the events : Stewards’ Handicap.—Negative 1, Dogger Bank 2, Wauchope 3. Time, 1 min, 38sec. Miramar Handicap. Epsom Lass 1, Undecided 2, Gold Circle 3. Time, imin 38 2-ssec. Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase, —Hoanga 1, Levent 2, St. Albert 3. Time, smin 50 3-ssec. Parliamentary Handicap. Electrakoff 1, Wimmera 2, Merrie Zealand 3. Time, imin sisec. Winter Hurdles.—The Rover 1, Compass 2, Te Ru 3. Time, 4mm 2 i*ssec. Trial Plate. —Ainsdale 1, Sir Knox 2, St. Petersburg 3. Time, 1 miri 24860. Te Aro Handicap.—Varna 1, Longstep 2, Taft 3. Time, imin 9 4‘ssec. NOTES. It will be noticed that the locally owned and trained horse, The Rover, was successful at Trentham on Saturday in the Winter Hurdles. Charlie Price was the successful jockey. The Trentham track, considering the amount of rain that had fallen, was in good condition, although the going was, of course, decidedly holding, and this fact was no doubt responsible for the slow times recorded. Captain Jingle fell in the Hunters’ Steeplechase, giving jockey J. O’Connell a very nasty spill.
