HEAVY RAINSTORM.

RIVER FEOODED,

RAILWAY TRAFFIC SUSPENDED ON PAEMERSTON FOXTON SECTION.

Heavy rain set in throughout this district on Saturday night, and about two inches of rain was registered at the local school in 24 hours. On Sunday the water channels and creeks were flooded. Asa result, there is a heavy flood in the Mauawatu River, and all the low-lying country for miles along the river bank is inundated.

The train to Palmerston this morning could not get through on account of the line, . the other side of Ra'ngiotu being, under water. The passengers were t ranshipped to a train at the other end. The Foxton train stayed at Rangiotu and passengers by the noon train from Palmerston were transferred to it and brought on to Foxton. At the present time it is impossible to ascertain whether the line is damaged to any extent, but they water is running over it for some distance and at midday was still rising.

The flood water is running across the roads at Moutoa and Whirokino, but traffic is not stopped.

The mails per coach have arrived to time.

To-day the weather has every appearance of clearing, but it is still raining on the hills.

Rev Bates wires at noon today :—Moderate to strong easterly winds; expect unsettled and cloudy weather ; rain probable ; rivers high ; glass unsteady ; indications for glass fall in 24 hours ; sea moderate swell; tides good. Fortunately for stock, the weather has been mild during the storm.
