FAILING TO REGISTER.
FINED FOUR POUNDS. Wellington, This Day. Three youths came before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M.,iu the Magisrate’s Court yesterday charged with having failed to register under the new Defence Act. Lieutenant Rassam appeared on behalf of the Defence Department. William Cornish, for whom Mr P, J. O’Regan appeared, pleaded guilty. Mr O’Regan said he realised that his Worship had to administer the law, but defendant desired to say (and his father was in complete agreement with him in saying it) that he felt compelled on coscieutious grounds, to object to compulsory military training, and intended to take the consequences. He was fined £4, with costs 7s, or twenty-one days’ imprisonment. Thomas McGregor and Thomas Scoringe were similarly charged. Scoringe pleaded guilty, but McGregor did not appear. Lieutenant Rassam stated that both the defendants had now registered. They were convicted and discharged.
