MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING.
The monthly meeting of the above was held on Tuesday. Present : Crs J. G. Wilson (chairman), T. Masters, G. Kendall, J. Henson, H. H. Hunt and Barber. Leave of absence was granted to Cr. R. B. McKenzie. The following letters were received : From Fred Shaw, asking permission to turn a cow on to the road reserve at Moutoa. From. Treasury, remitting 9s nd to the county fund.
From Minister for Internal Affairs, agreeing to pay a subsidy on swimming bath at Glen Oroua and public hall at Taikorea. From Minister for Railways, declining to refund railage on steel rails supplied by the Railway Department. From District Engineer, agreeing to stacking o£ metal for Beach road alongside the railway line. From Health Department, directing attention to regulations for destruction of rats.
From Moutoa Drainage Board, asking for further consideration of a grant towards cost of stop-bank at Moutoa, the total cost of which has been The Chairman reported that he had attended the Hospitals Conference, which had assumed quite a different phase from the previous conferences, being more of a Health Conference than Hospital and Charitable Aid. After paying a high compliment to the medical men for the assistance rendered to the Conference the Chairman pointed out that the cost of the administration of Hospital Boards would very likely be greatly increased in the near future. This would be mainly from the cost of combating consumption. He explained what was done in regard to the alteration in the election of members to the Boards. One very important matter discussed was the examination of school children by medical men, and Mr Wilson outlined the proposals as already published in the Herald. He said half the cost would tall on the Boards, the other half being met by the Government, in the scheme adopted. The part taken by radium in the discussions was explained by the Chairman, and Mr Wilson suggested something should be done in the matter. Nearly Soo deaths from cancer took place in the Dominion last year, and a similar number from consumptiou.
The Chairman pointed out that the amount granted by the Government as a Coronation subsidy to any county was Already £6O had been applied for by the Glen Oroua people for baths, and .£l5O by the Taikorea people fora Coronation Hall. The Chairman said there was also the Memorial Fountain at at Awahuri, which would cost another ,£SO. He had been promised each by Messrs Stevens and White, and ,£25 would come from the riding fund.
Cr Hunt: There’s another ,£l5O required for the Rongotea Hall. The Chairman explained that the project of the Old Men’s Home had assumed a much brighter aspect, owing to the liberality of the Kairanga County Council in giving a site of 10 acres in a suitable locality. The Council should be heartily thanked for their action.
