The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, July 6, 1911. NOTES AND COMMENTS.

A lengthy discussion took place iu the Levin Borough Council on Monday night on the Foxtou Harbour Board's proposal to acquire the wharf from the Railway Department, purchase a dredge, and the proportion (,£25 I per annum) Levin is asked to guarantee or contribute towards the loan of ,£27,000 for this purpose. It would appear, from the report of the proceedings published elsewhere in this issue, that certain Levin Councillors do not approve of “putting their heads iu a noose ” so tar as any financial responsibility is concerned. Mayor Gardener’s (who is Levin's representative on the Board) lucid explanation of the position should have convinced these gentlemen that the Board does not contemplate any wild-cat scheme whereby the loan money may be swept into the ocean. Almost the whole of the loan money will be required to acquire the wharf, the revenue from which, when acquired, will be sufficient to meet interest and siukiug fund on the loan. This tact should remove any ot the objections raised, The Board is not asking for money to erect training walls or a breakwater, or to engage in a war with nature. Were this the case, the Levin Councillors would be justified in holding up the Board’s proposals. Such objections may prejudice the action of other local bodies against the Board’s proposals. Mr Henuessy, the Chairman ot the Board, who has the whole scheme at his fingers end, is desirous of explaining any doubtful points, and has expressed his willingness to attend the next meeting of the Levin Borough Council and go thoroughly into the subject, which should result in the Council passing a unanimous resolution in favour of the scheme and Levin’s guarantee re same.
