400,000 SLEEP ON THE SANDS.

NEW YORK. July 3,

To-day was the hottest day of the year, following’ two davs of swelter. It. is estimated that 400,000 dept, on tie Uoney Island sands in an effort to keep cool. The dead list has been heavy through the eastern and middle States. A sweltering heat wave was experienced in Quebec. A terrific rainstorm followed The streets were Hooded and business was at a standstill. A panic occurred oil several river steamers, but it is believed no fatalities resulted. The scorching temperature still prevails in the eastern sections of Canada and the United States. Twenty-seven have died in Now York since Sunday* and fifteen m Philadelphia from heat.
