DR. BARNARDO’S HOMES.

(to the editor.) Sir,—The letter appearing in your last issue suggests to me that part of the generosity which has recently been so conspicuous in Foxton would be applied in the best possible way by a public contribution to the most worthy institution ever established in England. Our Mayor, borough councillors, town clerk, and citizens have recently shown what they can do when the public welfare is at stake. The erection of an up-to-date town hall is a most worthy object, but who will venture to suggest that it approaches in importance an institution established for the purpose of feeding, clothing, and educating the thousands of miserable, starving, and wretched children, doomed through no fault of their own to a life of misery and ignorance, and often crime, from which the only possible escape is the rescue afforded by these homes. People in this country can have little conception of the cold, hunger, misery, and cruelty which these unfortunates have to endure, and which is almost unknown here. I enclose a contribution towards this necessary and humane institution, and suggest that you, Sir, should intimate your willingness to receive any further contributions from the public and forward the amount received to the head office of the Homes by the next English mail. I have little doubt that the Foxton people, with their usual liberality in such matters, will do their best to enable you to send a substantial sum for the relief of suffering childhood.—l am etc., Humanity. [Our correspondent has forwarded us a donation of towards the funds of this worthy institution, and, as suggested by him, we x shall be pleased to receive further contributions, which will be duly acknowledged in these columns, and forwarded on to the head office of the Homes by the next English mail. — Ed. H.j
