Mr Coleman Phillips, the lounder of the co-operative system of dairying in New Zealand, in a letter to a Taranaki paper, says : “ My task in life has been to found a prosperous race of small farmers in New Zealand.”

There are 45 assisted immigrants on the Tongariro, due in Wellington at the end ot this week. They include 19 domestics, and one farmer, the rest being wives who are rejoining their husbands.

Mr John Gillespie, now retired from the police service on superannuation, well known in Foxton, and for many years in charge of the Temuka police district, left Temuka last Tuesday en route for Palmerston, where he intends taking up his residence. The appointment of Sir William Hall-Jones as High Commissioner in Eoudon will expire this year, and the question of choosing his successor has already formed a subject for speculation. Sir Joseph Ward is stated to have denied the suggestion of taking this office himself, but (says the Dominion) as this denial was made before he attained to the dignity of a baronetcy it is quite probable that his name will continue to be associated with the list of “ possibles.”

The Congress of the American Academy of Medicine, sitting at Eos Angeles, debated on the Influence of newspaper reports in spreading suicide as the result of publishing such occurrences. The Conference decided to appeal to all newspapers to refrain from making suicides public, as the consequence was to affect weak minds.

In a truancy case in the Dunedin Police Court on Saturday morning, the inspector handed in his list with the remark “ that he doubted if it had a parallel in the Dominion. ’ ’ The list showed that five members of one family had been sent to work at 14 years of age, and that three of them had not passed a standard. One of them had passed Standard I. and another Standard 11.

The engineering branch of the Railway Department has granted permission to the Manawatu County Council to discharge the metal to be used on the Beach road on the railway ground at the crossing on the Lady’s Mile. This will mean a considerable saving in cartage to the local bodies contributing to the cost of construction of the road.

At Mauakau last Wednesday afternoon, the mortal remains of the late Edward Bevan, senior, were committed to their last resting place. The coffin was conveyed on a four-wheeled vehicle, drawn by the Hui Mai football team arrayed in full football uniform ; the late Mr E. Bevan having been a member of that club, the members ot it were desirous of doing him special honour, and it was resolved that this could be shown best by paying him the tribute above described.

At the Palmerston S.M. Court yesterday, John Moughan, charged with betting in the Clarendon Hotel, was convicted and fined ,£25 and costs on each charge.

Five children at Poboyanka, in the Arkerman district, Russia, climbed into an iron safe, whose lid was propped open with a piece of wood. The prop was accidentally knocked away, the lid fell, and the children were suffocated.

At the local police court this morning, before Mr Hornblow J.P., Henry Taylor alias Pegtop, alias Stevenson, alias Henry Hill, was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond and with soliciting alms. The accused, who pleaded guilty, had been previously convicted of being an idle and disorderly person. Evidence was given by the police as to accused’s conduct and movements. Accused was sentenced to six weeks in the Wellington gaol. The water, drainage and electric lighting proposals submitted to the ratepayers of the Mangaweka Town Board on Saturday, were carried almost unanimously, there being only two votes recorded against the former and four against the latter. Practically all the ratepayers voted, and the result was received with great enthusiasm, as it will place Mangaweka among the leading towns on the Main Trunk line. It is only a few months ago since Mangaweka was constituted a Town Board.
