LECTURE ON THE SINGLE TAX.

Mr Withy, of Auckland, an apostle of Single Tax, gave a lecture in the Druids’ Hall, Shannon, on Tuesday evening, under the auspices of the Shannon Literary and Debating Society. The speaker is strongly opposed to land nationalisation, or State landlordism, but preached the doctrine that all taxation should be on the land, giving figures in support of his contentions.

At the close of the address a number of questions were put and answered, and some cross-firing indulged in. On the motion of Mr Barclay, the following motion was carried unanimously; “ That this meeting approves of the principle of rating on the unimproved value, and recommends it to be applied in the Horowhenua County,” A vote of thanks was heartily accorded to the lecturer and the chairman, Mr G. Selby.
