DEBATING SOCIETY.

The local Debating Society held its weekly meeting in the Presbyterian Hall on Tuesday night. There was a good attendance present aud the President (G. H. Stiles, Esq.) occupied the chair. A debate : “ Which is the greater evil, gambling or drink ? ” was discussed. The speakers were Messrs Johnson, Hornblow, Gabites, Chrystall, Dr. Adams, Kellow, Claris and J. Golden On a vote being taken, the meeting declared drinking the greater evil. Some very good arguments were brought torward by both sides, but the opinion was expressed that some other subject whicli could be debated for and against would have created more interest. The President thanked the Society for having elected him as its president, aud referred to the educational value of such institutions. It was stated that next Tuesday night would be devoted to impromptu speeches, which should be specially attractive.
