SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The ordinary meeting of the local State School Committee was held on Thursday night. Present : Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Betty (secretary), Geo. Coley, Henderson, Hussey, Hunt, Proctor, Read and Speirs. A letter from Mr McKnight, held over from last meeting, in reference to certain work which the writer considered had not been carried out according to specifications, was considered. The chairman explained that the work had been left in the hands ot Mr Coley, with power to act. The work had been carried out to Mr Coley’s satisfaction and the account paid. —Mr Coley said the fence complained of was not included in the work to be done. —The explanation was considered satisfactory, and the matter was dropped.
A letter was read from the Board in reference to fire insurance.—lt was decided to take out a policy for ,£SO on the piano, library and museum, and to increase the policy it teachers desired any effects covered, conditionally that they pay tor the increase.
A circular was read from the Board re programme to be carried out on Coronation Day. —It was decided that the children and staff be asked to take part in the public function in the aftemoon.
The visiting committee (Messrs Henderson and Hussey) reported that the wash-hand basins required attention, and the down pipe in one of the outhouses required repairing; also certain holes wanted filling up. —The repairs were left in the hands of Mr Speirs. The Chairman said the Council would supply the limestone ior filling as soon as it came to band. The Chairman was authorised to bring under the notice of the Board the necessity for re-erecting the fence on two sides of the old school residence.
The headmaster’s report stated that the average attendances for the past four weeks were: 3017, 29i'5, 291'!, 302. The average attendance for the whole period was out of an average roll number of 321. The present roll number is 322. The report also dealt with one or two minor matters.
The Inspector’s report was also submitted, and considered very satisfactory. The report stated that the organisation was satisfactory ; attendance very satisfactory ; one hour at a stretch for drill In Standard I. was adversely commented upon ; the class-rooms are clean and tidy, and the teachers have been at pains by a tasteful arrangement of pictures on the walls, flowers, etc., which give an attractive appearance ; the teaching is in accordance with approved methods, which gained the attention and response of the pupils ; a very satisfactory feature of the relation between the teacher and pupil is the interest taken by the teachers in the games. This care for the pupils in their play must exercise a wholesome influence on them in their work in the classroom ; the pupil teachers promise well, and give evidence of faithful attention bestowed on their training-
It was decided to plant the hill on the north boundary with suitable shrubs, and the details were left in the hands of the Chairman, headteacher, and Mr Coley. Accounts were passed for payment.
