YOU SHOULD BEAR IN MIND
That by using the commercia eucalyptus oil which is now bought up at fid per lbs weight and bottled, and on account of the large profit pushed, you are exposing yourself to all the dangers to which the use of turpentine will expose you, irritation of the kidneys, intestinal tract and uncous membranes. ground at the rate of ten knots per hour ; and it commenced working in the latter part of 1803. The greatly increased dredging power thus obtained, aided by the greater stability of the large vessel, should enable the desired depth, of 26 feel over the bar at low water of the lowest tides, to be attained, and the deep channel enlarged to an adequate width, so as to give access to vessels ol large draught at all states of the tide. Till the deep channel across the bar has been formed, and maintained for two or three years, it will be impossible to tell how much sand will have to be annually raised to preserve the depth, and consequently what the cost of maintenance will be. Besides, however, the important deepening of the channel over the bar, which is sure to be effected by the dredging plant at present (1596) in operation in Liverpool Bay, the improved channel will facilitate the influx of the flood tide up the navigable channel, and will check the changes in the position of the main channel.
[Since the above remarks were penned, dredging operations on the Mersey have justified the most sanguine expectations. Information from an authoritative source shows that the depth of water over the bar has been increased from iS){ feet below low water in 1592 to 30 feet at low water at the present time —a fact which should silence any opposition to the use ot the suction dredge where sand is the obstructing material.]
