CONSUMPTION.
Christchurch, Juue 15. Hon. G. Fowlds opened the children’s and women’s ward at the Christchurch Hospital to-day. The building cost nearly ,£20,000, whereof was collected by the ladies. In the course of a speech the Minister said they must continue the warlare against consumption with steadfastness and pertinacity, conscious that in the long run they would be able to severely “scotch,”, if not kill, this relentless foe of mankind. He was glad to note the distinct evidence that the death rate from consumption was decreasing, a fact which gave them every encouragement to pursue the campaign, He expressed pleasure at the cheerful manner in which the Hospital Boards in the Dominion were facing their new responsibilities under the new Act, and urged the necessity of base hospitals having subsidiary institutions. He referred to the necessity for the Christchurch Hospital district having the advantage of the services of a skilled bacteriologist.
