The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, June 15, 1911. CORONATION HALL FUND.

A subscription list in aid of the Coronation Hall Fund is being circulated in Foxton, and, judging by the ready response already made by individual members ol the Council, the appeal should result in the raising of £250 without any great difficulty. All subscriptions for this purpose will be subsidised by the Government to the extent of £1 for £1 up to £250. It is pointed out, by way of introduction to the list, that residents, by assisting to make the Hall capable of returning the maximum amount of profit, are helping to reduce the rates, as any surplus will go to the general fund. The following donations have been received; —G. H. Stiles Fsq. (Mayor), ,£ls; Cr Coley, ,£ls: Cr Greig, /15: Cr Gibbs, .£ls; Cr Carter, Cr Rimmer, ,£ls; Cr Speirs, ,£ls: Cr Adams, ,£ls ; CrJ Chrystall, ,£ls ; Cr Stewart, £5 ; Alf Fraser (Town Clerk), ,£io. _ Such generosity on the part of individual Councillors establishes, we believe, a Dominion record —the Council’s action is unique. It proves that our civic fathers are prepared “ to shed their own blood” before calling upon their fellow citizens to do so. It may be mentioned that several of the councillors are small ratepayers, and the loosening oi their purse-strings is not prompted by ulterior motives. It is ordinarily accepted that the services a citizen renders in his civic capacity is in itself all that should be reasonably expected of him —but the attitude of the Foxton Borough Council in subscribing among themselves the magnificent sum of ,£l5O for a local public institution is a staggerer. With such a lead the Council should not experience the least difficulty in collecting the balance required from local residents. As we have previously indicated the sum will go towards the installing of an electrical plant for the hall.

[Since the above was in print, Cr Greig who laid the claims ot the iund before Messrs Levin and Co., has received a reply to the effect that the firm will donate ,£25 to the fund. This now leaves £75 for local citizens to contribute. Crs. Coley and Greig are now on the warpath for the balance. A full list of subscribers will be published on Saturday. —Ed. H.l
