TOWN CLERK’S REPORT.

The Town Clerk’s report on the workings of the Borough for the past month, read at Monday night’s Council meeting, was as follows : “ The Borough drains have taken up most of the men’s time during the past month, the following drains having been cleaned out: Awahou to Johnston street, Johnston street to windmill, Avenue to Spring street, Russell street, Norbiton road, Spring street, Heta street, Jenks street (both sides), Coley street (both sides), Futter street, Union street, Purcell street (both sides). The Public Works Committee visited the corner of Union and Johnston streets, and, after inspection, decided to form a footpath from the cornet to the clump of boxthorn as soon as men are at liberty. .They also inspected Frances and Reeve streets junction, and decided to place pipes right across the junction of the two streets, and form and metal the connecting piece between the two roads. The Committee next inspected -the drain from Johnston street to the river, and agreed that .it wanted cleaning out, if not lowering. (Wm. Ross and Son have since cleaned out their part, and Mr J. Rose has received notice to do his.) Since Wm. Ross and Son have cleaned out their part the water that was lying there has all disappeared. Baker street was next visited, and after discussion it was resolved that Mr Carter be granted use of the road grader, and a payment of £6 to finish the formation ot Baker street and to secuie the sand hill. The pipes required to cross Reeve street, Futter street, and Coley street have arrived, and are now being placed in position. I propose to do the road in front of the N.Z. Shipping Co.’s sheds next, and then to fill in some bad holes on roads among others, Russell street and Lady’s Mile—after which I think the grader should be used to re-form some of the roads when the weather is suitable. The ground inside of the tree triangles must be dug within a week if any good is to be expected from the work.”
