THE WAIRAU.
berthed at the wharf.
Pumping operations were successful on the stranded Wairau, and yesterday morning she was towed up to the wharf by the “ Planet.” When she was berthed a number of people inspected her. The hatches were taken off, and the coal does not appear to be affected by its immersion. Diver Smith is to be congratulated upon the success which attended his dogged determination to raise the vessel without lifting her cargo, and this he did in spite of a Iresh in the river, a strong current and muddy water.
The fore part of the vessel and engine room, together with the engines are covered with a thick coating of mud, which will require a vast amount of cleaning. Except lor the rent in the port side, the vessel is not damaged. Unloading operations will commence to-day. It is expected that the vessel will be repaired and the machinery overhauled locally which will take about a fortnight. Mr Perano, the owner, is in Foxton and will superintend operations.
