THEFT OF WAGES.
OFFICER GIVES HIMSEEF IN CHARGE.
Dunedin, April 26
In the Police Court this morning Arthur Robert James Cant, master mariner, who had charge of the Union Steam Ship Co.’s labour department, was charged with stealing ,£llß 17s, the property of the company. The case showed some remarkable features. It appeared accused was in financial difficulties, and in order to pay pressing accounts he used the money which had been given him to pay off the crew of the Koromiko. Detective Ward said accused called at the police station and said he wished to give himself in charge because he had stolen j£ loo belonging to the Union Company. Accused signed a statement, and handed to witness odd.
Witness and others testified that accused bore an excellent character. Accused’s solicitor asked for bail, but the Magistrate indicated that in accordance with the recent diction of the Supreme Court Judge this was not a case in which he would be free to allow bail if accused pleaded guilty.
Accused then reserved his defence, and was committed for trial. Bail was allowed.
