MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the above was held on Monday. Present ; Crs, J. G, Wilson (chairman), J. Henson, G. Kendall, R. B. McKenzie, T. Masters, H. H. Hunt, and W. Barber. The following letters were dealt with : From Valuation Department, stating that fresh valuations are being made of Sandon, Mt. Stewart, and Awahou ridings. From Bulls Town Board, stating that Mr D. Coughlin had been appointed tramway extension delegate. From Martou Borough Council, stating that the Mayor had been appointed tramway extension delegate. From Rangitikei County Council, appointing Mr D. Fraser tramway extension delegate. From Rongotea Town Board, appointing Mr E. K. Ransom tramway extension delegate. From Foxton Harbour Board, urging the completion of the road to the Heads.
From Mr Hugh Akers, asking for a thoroughlare through reserve at Moutoa.
From Mr H. F. Davies, asking the Council to cover the culvert to the drain level on the HimatangiFoxlon road.
From Messrs J. E. Nathan and Co., in reference to the erection of a dried milk factory at Taikorea, and the tramway time-table. The Tramway Manager (Mr Drew) reported : The amount of traffic has kept up well, and a credit balance of ,£63 os Qd was the result. Included in the expenditure are amounts of £l6 14s 5d for new knuckle pins and gear for engine Manawatu, and £l4 10s 3d for wire, etc., for fences at Pukenui. The following were the chief items of traffic : Grain, 245 tons; minerals, 88 tons; merchandise, i6Bj4 tons; pigs, 10 trucks; chaff, 29 trucks ; timber, 25,300 ft ; metal, 320yds; fares £6 9s rod. Two special trains were run for the laying out of telegraph poles for the Department. For the year ended March 31, the receipts of the tramway were /4210 7s 4d, a record, and expenditure 17s 4d, showing an apparent debt of .£442 I 0S > but incluuded in the expenditure is /1221 for new engine and ,£74 qs 7d for sleepers tor re-laying. The- actual credit balance on the working was 19s 7d, which must be considered very satislactory. The following were the receipts for the last six years : 1906, is 4d; 1907, £2339 los 7d ; 1908, 17s xod ; 1909. £3020 16s 5d ; 1910, 7s 5d ; 1911, ,£4210 7s 4dThe balances of the various accounts are ; General account, cr., < £i3s9 i 4S4d; loan account, cr., osgd; net credit balance, penditure : Sandon riding, 13s 2d ; Mount Stewart, /21 14s 46 ; Waitohi, 12s 4d. Amounts over expended-. Rongotea riding, £BO is 6d; Carnarvon, ,£l9 xos 7d; Kawakawa, £55 8s 6d ; Awahou, 15s 3d ; Whirokino, £72 16s 2d. Mr F. Purnell was appointed assessor of the Valuation Court for the Manawatu County.
The Chairman was appointed tramway extension delegate and the conference is to be held as soon as possible at Marton. It was decided to hold the monthly meetings in future on the first T uesday in each month. Mr Kilsby is to be informed that the Council would cut the scrub on the lower part of the Pukipuki if he will clear the grass and gorse away. The following alterations to the rate roll were agreed to: Robinson Bros, to A. S. Easton, Lots 4,9, 10, and ii, Foxton ; do. to G. T. Woodroofe, Lots 1,2, 7 ; do. to Coley and Bock, Lot 8 ; do. to G. Coley, Lots 1 and 2, all Foxton.
