Keeping the cradle regularly occupied means, to the average artisan and tradesman at least, an overstrain of the elastic pursestring. A Wellington suburban bootmaker with a large quiver-full and a small business was the defendant in a judgment summons case at the Wellington Magistrate’s Court recently. When he informed the Magistrate (Dr. M‘Arthur, S.M.), that he was the father of twelve children, and at present had to keep eight of them —the youngest a few months old —and, further, that his weekly earnings averaged between £2 5s and £2 10s, the magistrate made no order., A correspondent of the Kaikoura Star writes as follows: If the persons who helped themselves to four of my ducks on Thursday night last will bring back the pair of white Aylesburys I would be greatly obliged. This particular pair were imported, and I wanted them for the show. There is no need for the party who appropriated them to bring them to my house; just leave them in the paddock from which they were taken, and take away a few fowls, a fat lamb, or a sucking pig, in exchange. That will do. A good rubbing of the chest and back with Rocke’s Eucalyptus Oil and a few drops sprinkled on your pillow will relieve a cold. Ask for Australia’s best “Rocke’s.” 4
