The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, March 14, 1911. NOTES AND COMMENTS.

Quite a number of ratepayers who had expressed a desire to vote at to-morrow’s poll on the loan proposal for the Municipal Hall, find that their names do not appear on the ratepayers’ list. They are thus precluded from “ having a say ” on this important question. It is the duty of ratepayers to see that their names appear on the rate roll, as it is impossible for the Town Clerk to transfer names without authority. While on this point we remind all persons of either sex over 21 years of age, and who have been resident in the borough for a period of not less than three mouths, to get oiled in order to exercise their votes at all future municipal elections, and so take advantage of the extended franchise provided in the Municipal Corporations Act. In view of the near approach of the municipal elections see that you are enrolled. The Town Clerk will provide you with the necessary forms, and will be pleased to tender all information required on the subject.

Addressing a political meeting at Carterton last week, Mr Hornsby, liberal candidate in the forthcoming general election contest, said that the public did not benefit from the taking off of the duty from sugar and oil. He might have added tea also. Speaking of the Railways Department he said certain heads spent all their time in devising little tiddlywinking schemes which irritated the men and reinforced his own opinion that the big system had outgrown their capacity. The Minister was not an expert, so that when he took a hand there was more trouble. The sooner New Zealand imported some hardheaded man from a great railway to work the system on business lines the better. He would be worth a year. There is a good deal of sense in that contention.
