THE HEMP INDUSTRY.
BONUS FOR IMPROVED MACHINERY. The Government has decided to offer a bonus of ,£12,000 for an improved method of treating New Zealand hemp, if a suitable machine can be agreed upon by the flaxmillers and approved by Government. The machine, to obtain the bonus, must, states the Prime Minister, be one that will create a sufficient improvement In the treatment of hemp as to enable the product to be sold at a higher price than at present obtained. “ The flaxmillers suggested some time ago that an export duty be placed upon flax to meet the cost ot devising improved methods, but the Government does not propose to impose such a condition, as the direct and indirect advantages that will accrue if a suitable machine can be devised will be considerable.” >
