THE AUCKLAND MURDER.
DEATH SENTENCE COMMUTED.
At the meeting of the Executive at Wellington yesterday, his Excellency the Governor presiding, and all Ministers being present, it was decided to commute the sentence of death passed upon Albert Ernest Cash for the murder of his wife at Heleusville to one of imprisonment for life. A message from Auckland states; —Cash has been confined in Mount Eden prison, and a constant watch kept on him day and night. Though he has conversed with his keepers occasionally, the prisoner has generally maintained a listless attitude, and when the gaoler acquainted him with the decision of Cabinet he received the news quite casually. Although Cash is by no means in a low physical condition, the authorities, upon advice of the gaol surgeon, have had him removed to the prison hospital, where he can converse with his fellow prisoners.
