SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the local State school committee was held on Thursday night. Present: Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Alex. Speirs, Hussey, Bullard, and Betty (secretary). The headmaster’s report, which was read and received, stated that the average attendance for the month was 293‘9, out of an average roll number of 325. The present roll number is 32 2. The highest attendance was 306 (to-day). It will be noticed that the average for the period works out at 90 per cent, of the roll number. The staff is now complete. Mr Wilson took up his duties as tourth assistant on February 6th, and Miss K. Jamieson, pupil teacher, began on February 13th. The report asked that the old school site be levelled. The school attendance was commented upon, and although considered good, being 90 per cent, of the roll number, is not sufficient to enable the school to remain in the grade it had risen to on last year’s attendance. Regret was expressed that several parents had sent their children elsewhere. The chairman pointed out that unless it could be proved that the children who had left the State school for the convent were putting in the required attendance there as set out by the Act, steps would be taken to proceed against the parents. Some parents were of opinion that compulsory attendance did not apply to the convent school, but in this they were mistaken. The chairman was appointed to confer with the headmaster on the subject. The Inspector of Nuisances gave notice to have the trees in Duncan street trimmed back to the fence line. The Chairman and Mr Hussey were appointed visitors for the month, A sub-committee was set up to deal with the levelling of the playground and other matters. Other minor matters were discussed, and the meeting rose.
