BOROGH COUNCIL.

SPECIAL MEETING

A special meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held in the Council Chamber last night, to receive tenders for the supply and carting of metal, and general. Present: His Worship the Mayor (G. H. Stiles Esq.) and Crs Coley, Gibbs, Speirs, Stewart and Rimmer.

Only one tender, that of James White, at 2s 7)£d on trucks at Palmerston North, was received for the supply of Palmerston metal. For carting from the local pit, two tenders were received. James Coley at 5s 3d per yard and W. J. Fullam at 5s per yard.

There was some discussion as to which class of metal was the most suitable, and it was eventually decided on the motion of Cr Gibbs, seconded by Cr Speirs, that Mr White’s tender be accepted. The Mayor said that Mr Newman, M.P., had mentioned to him, that a number of boroughs were making application to the Government for subsidies in connection with the commemoration of the Coronation, and he thought it would be advisable to apply for a subsidy for the proposed municipal hall. He moved that this Council make application to the Government, through Edward Newman, Esq., M.P., for a coronation subsidy of ,£250 towards the erection of a Coronation Town Hall. Seconded by Cr Coley, and carried.

A letter was read from Mr W. Gray, stating that he had received notice from the Inspector of Nuisances to remove the pigs kept in a sty on the back boundary of his property. He said he understood the Inspector was quite within his rights in serving the notice, but asked the Council’s permission to still keep the pigs, which were not causing a nuisance as the sty and everything about it was kept clean. The sty was 2% chains from the house and three chains from the main street.

The by-law dealing with same reads as follows;—“No swine shall be kept in the borough within a distance of 200 feet from any dwelling house, nor within five chains of the main street.’’ It was decided to leave the matter over for a full meeting.
