AUSTRALIA v. SOUTH AFRICA. AUSTRALIA WINS THE RUBBER. Australia defeated the South Africans in the last test match played at Melbourne and completed on Tuesday, thus winning the rubber. In the first innings South Alrica knocked up 205 and fell to pieces in the second, only accounting tor 174. Australia’s first innings totalled 32S and 587 in the second. The great margin clearly evinced the superiority of the Australians.
The Sydney Telegraph says the feature of the fourth test matcu was Hordern's bowling. It is remarkable that while the South Africans rely on his type of bowling they make such a poor showing against it. lie bowls the true googlie, inasmuch as he turns the ball both ways with his leg-break action and also sends in straight balls with the same action. Faulkner’s carrying of the rest of the team in the second innings is not unusual. Armstrong’s 132 was a remarkable ellort, inasmuch as he was frequently stuck up by Schwarz. He is no nearer mastering that bowler than when he first met him.
The Sydney Morning Herald declares that there is not the slightest doubt about the pre - eminence ot Australian cricket. The match just concluded demonstrated Australia’s superiority in every department ot the game. The South Alricans have, however, made their claims to international laurels strongly enough. They play the game to the end no more discouraged by defeat than exalted by victory. The Pall Mall Gazette says the South African cricketers were probably asj successful as could reasonably be anticipated.
The Westminster Gazette says the Australians are simply too good for their opponents. The Globe says nobody can deny that the Australians belong to a really superior class. The South Africans’ general weakness is a serious deterrent to the projected triangular tests.
