BOWLING.

The chief bowling excitement during the week was the local contest for the Manawatu Ferns. A very close and exciting game resulted. The nineteenth head showed level pegging, the holders eventually winning by three points. It was undoubtedly the hardest game the holders have yet had, and there appeared an air of relief about them when the game was finished.

HOLDERS. CHALLENGERS. Hennessy Whibley Petrie Speirs Rimmer Mairs Witched (s) 21 Hopper (s) 18. Next Wednesday will see Otaki here playing for the Ferns.

The game for the Club Feathers played yesterday afternoon, resulted in a runaway victory for the holders by 13 points. Having now wou them three times, the feathers must be surrendered to the Club, and a fresh ballot taken. HOPUKKS. CHAU.KNGHKS. Hamer Walker Hopper Littlejohn Stuuuell Spring Heuuessy (s) 25 Hairs (s) 12.

Auother event of great interest is to take place during the week — but of this more anon.

Terrace End and Palmerston N. are holding tournaments on their respective greens at Plaster. Should any members of the Club desire to make up a rink will they please advise the secretary ? The bowling raconteur, like the “fish” fabler, is always subject to the strict application of the ” cum grano sails ” rules, but we have, nevertheless, been able to learn ot a bowling incident which although distinctly unique, is nevertheless true. On the Napier green the other day a prominent skip was lighting an up hill game and indulged in some last driving. He had just reached a stage in the game when something had to be done, and let go a real good drive. At the critical moment a rat ran across the green and his bowl struck the rodent and temporarily stunned it. The opposing skip, with heroic presence of mind, rushed up and killed the animal, but the shot was declared “ dead.”
