Last week Baron Decies married Helen Gould (the inheritor of Jay Gould’s millons, and said to be the richest bride in the world) at Bartholomew’s Church, New York, The leaders of American and English society crowded the church. The edifice was converted into a conservatory of rare tropical plants. Earl Percy and Lord Conwys acted as ushers. There were six bridesmaids. Lord Alastair Graham was best man. The bride wore white duchess satin overlaid with silver roses and embroidery, and a court train. A double ring service was performed.

A London cablegram states that Lord Charles Beresford has retired from the navy, having reached the age limit. Admiral Lord Charles Beresford was born in 1846, and is the second son of the Rev John, fourth Marquis of Waterford. He entered the “Brittania” as a cadet in 1859, and was made a sub-lieutenant in 1866, lieutenant in 1868, and commander in 1875, reaching his captaincy in 1882, and being made a rear-admiral in 1897. 1° 1896-7 he was Naval A.D.C. to her late Majesty Queen Victoria, and Naval A.D.C. to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales on his visit to India in 1875-6. In 1874 be entered politics, and represented various constituencies for a great many years. He commanded the “ Condor ” in the bombardment of Alexandria in 1882, and was specially mentioned in despatches for gallantry. He was again mentioned for gallantry when in command of an expedition which saved Sir Charles Wilson’s party in the “ Sdfia,” when the bofler was repaired under fire. He was a Lord Commander of the Admiralty in 18S6, but resigned in 1888 on a question of the strength of the fleet. Amongst other commands he had command of the Channel Squadron 1903-1905, and was made admiral in 1906, com-mander-in-chief of the Mediterranean Fleet in 1905-7, and of the Channel Fleet 1907-9. He has published several essays, articles, and volumes on naval matters.
