BOWLING.

Shannon howlers turned up in force to the local bowling green yesterday, and a most enjoyable afternoon was spent. Interest centred round the contest for the Mauawatu Ferns, which Foxton still retain. The following games were played : KOX'i'ON. SHANNON', Kiuueberg Mitchell Whibley • Clayton Mairs Stephenson Stiles (s) 22 Gunning (s) 23 Spring Olsen Speirs Dunckley Walker Lind Hopper (s) 14 Knowles (s) 22 Littlejohn Ashby Ross Parkes Stunuell (s) 26 Harrison (s) 21 MANAWATLI I'KRNS. Hennessy Hansen Petrie Roose Rimmer Galland Witchell ts) 32 Lssou (s) 15 At the conclusion of the games, Mr Stephenson, president of the Shannon Chib, in a neat little speech, congratulated Foxton on their win, thanked them for their hospitality, and gave them a hearty invitation to Shannon at any time, and called for three cheers for the local Club, which was heartily responded to. Mr Stiles (president), in replying, expressed the pleasure it bad given the Club to meet so many Shannon players, and promised them an early visit. Cheers for the visitors followed the conclusion of his speech.

A call for cheers for the ladies met with hearty response, and terminated'the day’s proceedings. Afternoon tea was provided by Mesdames Petrie, Witchell, Hornblow, and Misses Heunessy, Ross, Speirs and Rimmer. Our local Club is to be congratulated upon the success it has achieved in competitions for the Manawatu Ferns. To have the scalps of Levin, Terrace Knd and Shannon hanging at their belts is no mean performance for such a young club, and whatever the future may hold tor them they will always look back with pleasure on their debut in the bowling world. Palmerston N. is understood to have a challenge in for the Ferns, and a challenge has also been received from within the Club.
