THE PAHIATUA SUICIDE.
GAMBLER’S SAD END,
The following letter, addressed to Constable Tanner, was read at the inquest on the body of Frank Storey, tailor, of Pahiatua: —“ To Mr Tanner.—Dear Sir, —No doubt you will be surprised to receive this letter. Well, to make a long story short, I have been gambling heavily of late, and have lost every shilling I had. (God help my family), I can’t live to face it out, so you will find my body in the river where the men bathe in the deep hole. You will notice a plank projecting over the bank. Well, I jumped off into deep water. You can read this letter at the inquest. What I have written is only too true, aud my family are left penniless. You will find my hat and coat on the bank.—Yours, and respectfully, F. Storey.” The following footnote was added:— “ Wire the news to the address below to the man himself, and he will convey the sad news to my wife. Address: J. Cleveworth, Aldwin’s Road, Linwood, Christchurch.”
