SCHOOL COMMITTEE
The meeting of the local School Committee was held on Thursday evening. Present: Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Betty, Bullard, Geo. Coley, Henderson, Hussey, and Alex. Speirs. The Chairman explained that the old school had been disposed ol by the Board for the sum of ,£lO3, and the Board had decided to spend this sum in the erection of a storage building, fencing, etc. An informal meeting ot the committee had been held at which Mr Fraser, Board member, was present, and a special committee cosistiug ot the Chairman and Messrs Coley and Speirs was set up to act with Mr Fraser in deciding upon the work to be carried out. This included the erection ot a windmill and tanks, shed, repairs to and continuation of iron fence along Duncan street. The sub-com-mittee’s action was endorsed, and the specifications re same were read. The Board had also put in extra windows in two of the classrooms during the vacation. It was decided to erect the windmill between the old cemetery lence and the south-east corner of the school. The Board notified the Committee that it had appointed Mr Wilson as assistant teacher. Mr Wilson forwarded testimonials which were considered satisfactory and it was unanimously decided to approve ot the appointment. A vote ol thanks was passed to the leaching staff for their efforts in organising and carrying out the floral fete and also to the Chairman of the Board who had presented the prizes and otherwise assisted at the function. The headmaster's report stated that the average attendance for the last quarter of last year was 330*1. The roll number at the end of the year was 392 ; the average attendance lor the whole year was 318 ; the school opened on Wednesday last with an attendance of 284; the roll number is approximately 325 ; 16 pupils have been admitted. Two pupils, Elsie Rimmer and Basil Walls, passed the Board’s junior scholarship examination. Reference was aiso made to the success whica had attended the efforts of the children in the school gardens competition and to other minor matters. It was decided that all school requirements be ordered through the Chairman. Mr Coley gave notice to move at the next meeting that the headmaster’s attendance at Committee meetings is not necessary, except for special purposes. A number of accounts were passed for payment. Messrs Coley and Henderson were appointed visitors for the mouth. It was decided that in future public tenders be called for all work to be done at the school in excess ol £2. It was decided to meet at 3 p.m. to-day to consider tenders for erection ot shed, windmill, etc,, and the meeting rose.
