FOXTON RACING CLUB.
ANNUAL RACK MEETING. The Foxton Racing Club’s annual race meeting held on Saturday last and yesterday was a pronounced success from every point ol view. The weather on days was good and consequently the attendance of the public was large. The whole countryside was well represented there being a steady stream of vehicles of all descriptions into the town from every direction throughout both Saturday and Monday mornings. The special trains from Feilding and Palmerston were particularly well patronised and from an attendance point of view this year's gathering is a record one. The general complaint throughout the Dominion, of the tightness of the money market apparently does not apply to the sporting fraternity, as the sum of ,£13,889 was passed through the totalisator. This amount is an increase on last year’s figures t>6 r °f The amount of the totalisator investments tor the first day was as agaiHast £632.1 for the corresponding day of last year’s meeting, an increase of £328, and for the second day /,703b as against: £6841 an increase of £195. To this must be added the amount taken by the bookmakers, which would Lie a very considerable amount as these leather lunged layers of the odds appeared to be doing good business throughout both Jays. The amount for license fees paid to the Club in this connection was ,651° being /a 16 for the first day and £324 second day. The racing throughout was most interesting, some very fine finishes being witnessed, and Mr Henrys, the Club’s haudicapper, is to be complimented on the really line adjustments made. Mr Angus Keith made his first appearance as the Club’s official starter and his despatches left nothing to be desired. He had big fields to deal with and if he is as successful with the barrier at other meetings as he on Saturday his services should Be in great demand throughout the Dominion. On Saturday Mr Keith received the sad intelligence 01 his brother’s death, at Napier, and left for that place immediately. Mr T. Cameron was engaged for the second day, and officiated at the barrier in all races except the first, which was started by the well-known local trainer-owner, Mr S. Messena, on account of Mr Cameron having a horse engaged. Messrs Langley Bros., the wellknown caterers, had charge of the luncheon booth and the requirements of the hungry were attended to m the firm’s best style. Throughout, the meeting was admirably managed by a hard working setoff stewards and officials, headed by the indefatigable secretary Mr W. Gray. This was Mr Gray’s first year in the position and he carried out his many duties in a first-class manner. Everyone who came in contact with him speaks in the highest praise of his courteous and obliging manner. The Club is certainly most fortunate in obtaining the services of such a firstclass secretary. Mr J. R. Whyte officiated as judge and carried out his duties to the satisfaction of Jail, his decisions being given promptly and accurately. Throughout both days the proceedings were considerably enlivened by selections by the local Borough Band. The following are the results: FIRST DAY. t. Hack Hurdle Handicap, 80 sovs.. The start was a beautiful cue, the field moving off in line. The colours of Yorkshire soon became prominent, and the Phaeton gelding led past the stand the first time. Going round the back Eiya assumed command, and led to straight entrance, when Millennial moved up, and, coming on well, wou comfortably by a length and a half, with a length separating second and third. Himitangi tell during the race, but Abbott escaped injury. Captain Bell was always in a good position in the Electric Hack Handicap, and ran home an easy winner by two lengths, with very little to choose between second and third. Irish Rifle was the first to show out from a splendid start in the Cup, and the chestnut was in the lead on passing the stand the first time. After going a mile Voetgang got in front of Irish Rifle and led into the straight. Meanwhile Fliugot was coming fast, and catching Voetgang a hundred yards from the post, won by half a length, with very little to spare between her and Rauparaba. Irish Rifle was fourth and Teotane fifth. The Trial Hack Race saw seventeen horses facing the starter, and a real good start was effected. There was some scrambling for places at the entrance to the straight, and Sunrose fell, unseating his xider, who fortunately escaped injury. Eva eventually won by a length from a rank outsider in Good Form. The Awahou Welter was productive of au excellent contest. Leolanter was the first to begin, and going round the back he was joined by Whitestone, and the pair were running abreast for a couple of furlongs. At the straight entrance several others joined in, and in a splendid run to the post Meroze won by a neck, with a
similar distance separating second j and third. i Herraia led from end to end in | tlie Flying Handicap, and won comfortably by a length from Gladiole, who just beat Lady Moutoa for second place. The latter’s saddle slipped, which caused her rider some uneasiness, j Sir Frisco was fully a dozen lengths away last. The Dash Hack, of four fur- j longs, resolved itself into a duel ■ between Seaweed and Katipo. The former winning by a length, with Borouia close up. The concluding event, the Herrington Welter, was looked upon as a certainty for Golden Loop, and this view proved correct, the horse winning by a length from Waipunui, who was followed at a similar distance by Thetis. NOTES ON THE RACING. Three horses, Himatangi, Impossible and Conorus, were withdrawn from the Hack Hurdles, leaving a field of seven. Of these Te Whetu was installed favourite, Eiya and Whitestone also being well backed. From the start Whitestone led for six furlongs with Eiya second, but then the Lxrk, the biggest outsider, took command and wou without being pushed, by three-quarters of a from Merr> r Lawn, Eiya a couple couple of lengths away third. In this race both the first and second horses form was very inconsistent with that shown on the first day. Borouia and Seaweed were made equal favourites for the Telephone Hack Handicap, but after a good race the winner turned up in Lady Doris, with the two favoxxrites filling the places. Silva and Meroze declined their their engagements in the President’s Handicap, and of the remaining seven Voetgang, who ran such a good race in the Cup, was installed favoixrite, but was never in the hunt, the race being won by Irish Rifle practically from end to end. Teotane finished about a length behind the winner, and Golden Loop and Fliugot ran dead heat for third place. Herrington was the popular fancy for the Ma'den Scurry, and apparently the public were “in the know ” as he wou a good race by half a length from Melalogue, the third favourite, with Makara, second in the betting, third. Ten horses went to the post for the Carnarvon Hack Welter of which Leolanter, with Young up, was made a red hot favourite. Seaweed however, proved too fast for the Leolauter gelding, and won a nicely timed race by half a length. Teotane, who ran second in the President’s Handicap was third. Although there were only four starters in the Newmarket Handicap, it was one of the best betting races of the day. Gladiole was considered the best of good things and the way in which the public pushed in to put their money on this filly gave one the impression that they considered the race as good as over. There was only one horse in the race, however, and this was the locally owned and trained Moutoa Girl who won as she liked and paid a really good dividend for a field of four. In the January Hack Handicap, Captain Bill got a“fly,” which undoubtedly gave him the race. The finish was a good one, all the horses with the exception of Restep, who was half a chain away, being bunched. The scratching pen was freely used in the Moutoa Welter, ouly five of the eleven acceptors facing the barrier. The betting wasfairiy even, with Shannon Lass and The Rover most in demand. These two horses filled the places, The Rover, coming very fast at the finish, beating Shannon Lass rather easily. WINNING OWNERS.
