CRICKET.

On Saturday afternoon a match was played on the Perk pitch between a team representing the Palmerston North High School Old Boys’ Club and a local team. The match was arranged practically at the last minute and consequently neither side were represented by its full strength The visitors arrived with only eight men and three substitutes had to be picked up on the ground, but even so they proved altogether too strong for the Foxtonians, defeating them by an innings and n runs. The exhibition of cricket was very poor, except in bowling in which Wells (Palmerston) and McMurray (Foxton) showed particularly good form. A return match will be played at Palmerston North at an early date. The following are the scores : PALMERSTON. At Adelaide on Friday the weather was fine for the finish of the third test match between South Africa and Australia. The attendance was about 1500. Australia with 187 runs for the loss of four wickets, and 191 more required to win, continued their second innings, but when the last wicket fell the score was 339, South Africa winning by 38 runs. Altogether three test matches have been played, Australia winning two and South Africa one. As five matches are to be played it should be interesting to watch the result of the rest.
