NEWS AND NOTES.
Says an exchange : —A question having arisen as to when Christmas Day last fell on a Sunday, it may be answered that Christmas, 1904, was on a Sunday, skipping the Saturday as it was leap year. Christmas will not again fall on a Sunday till 1921, as it skips 1916 and falls on a Monday owing to it being a leap year. ‘‘Officer, what is this man charged with,” asked a Magistrate, who appeared on the Bench for the first time. “Bigotry, your Worship. He’s got three wives.” The new justice rested his elbows on the desk, and placed his finger tips together. “Officer,” he said, “what is the use of all this education, all these evening schools, all the technical classes, and what not ? Please remember in any future case that any man that has married three wives has not committed bigotry, but trigonometry. Proceed !” No War Office can beat the redtapeism of the following circular issued from the French Ministry of War, writes a Paris correspondent to a Loudon journal. Tire famous order, “White glovesmust be worn in action,” is nothing to it. Officers in barracks all over the country are requested to forward to headquauers reports on the question of a standard broom to be used in all regimental buildings, with particular regard to (1) the length and diameter of broomstick required, (2) the exact nature of the desired birch or horsehair, etc., (3) the size and number of the latter wanted for each broom, (4) the method of adjustment, (5) the distance between the holes in which the birch or horsehair, etc., is inserted, ami the number of the same per broom. One pictures gallant warriors sitting up all night counting piles of horsehair and drawing up voluminous reports on the ideal standard for a regimental broom.
