LIST OF NFW ACTS. A number of the Acts passed : (luring last session of Parliament will come into force on January r. i These are the Crimes Amendment Act, Destitute Persons Act, Commercial Trusts Act, Secret Commissions Act, Auctioneers Amendment Act, P.y-Laws Act, Indecent Publications Act, National Provident Fund Act, and the Post and Telegraph Amendment Act, Under IheCrimes Amendment Act, judges and magistrates are given power to order that a prisoner be detained in a reformatory at the end of his sentence, tor a period from three years in the Magistrate’s Court cases to ten years in Supreme Court cases. Facilities are provided by the Destitute Persons i Act lor making the path of the | wife and child deserter more difficult. A number of difficulties ; which exist at present in the way , of prosecution for the publication ! of improper matter are overcome ' by the new Act governing them. ; The Commercial Trusts Act is , designed for the repression of i monopolies in trade or commerce, | and the Secret Commissions Act I renders illegal the practice of | agents in secretly accepting pay- j merits and other valuable con- ] siderations from third persons in j respect of the business of the j principals. I The Auctioneers Amendment ( Act provides that at auction sales | of fish, fruit, or vegetables, every j lot shall be sold to the highest j bidder, and the auctioneer must j not refuse a bid from any person who is willing to pay cash for the goods on the fall of the hammer. The Act also enables the local | authority, on application, to | make out the auctioneers license j in the name of any person named by the applicant. | The By-laws Act is a general measure intended to make better provision than existed previously tor validating by-laws made by local authorities. In addition to machinery amendments of the original Act, the Post and Telegraph Amendment Act provides that the Governor may take and retain possession of telegraph stations in time of war. The National Provident Fund Act provides .State aid towards a scheme to encourage the making of provision against destitution, arising from old age, sickness, widowhood, and orphanage. The Gaming Amendment Act, abolishing bookmakers and reducing the number of totalisator permits, comes into operation on j January 31st. 1 The Public Revenue Act, which ! substitutes the post-audit system I in connection with the public ac- j counts lor the existing pre-audit system, comes into operation on April 1 st.
