AUTHORISED VERSION OF THE BIBLE.
TivRCKNTJ V NARY COMMEMORATION. Ronjkin, December 20. The commemoration of the f tercentenary of the Authorised i Version of the Bible is to commence in Britain on the 26th March. As the actual dale of publication has not been discovered, a date has been chosen so as not to * "Interfere with the Coronation festivities. The Canadian celebrations will be held in February, and in the United States in April. [The English Bible, which is now recognisec,! as :he Authorised Version wherever the Jvnglish • is spoken, is a revision p's Bible, begun in and published in 1611. It arose out of the conference between the High Church and Row Church parties, which was held by James I. at Hampton Court in 1604, being originally proposed by Dr. Reynolds, president dl Corpus Chrisli College, Oxford, the leader and spokesman of the Row Church party, and subsequently the committee which revised £he translation of the Prophets. No real opposition was offered to the proposal, and the King cleverly sketched out on the moment a plan to be adopted. Pie “ wished that some special pains should be taken in that behalf for one uniform translation, and this to be done by the best learned in both universities ; after them, to lie revised by the bishops and the learned of the Church ; and, lastly, to be ratified by his Royal authority. And so this whole Church to be bound upon if, and none other.” He also particularly desired that no notes should be added by way of comment in the margin. The scholars to whom was entrusted the work were chosen without reference to party.]
