SCHOOL FLORAL FETE.

At Thursday night’s meeting of the School Committee, progress was reported in respect to the forthcoming school Floral Fete. Owing to the destruction of the Public Hall, the school concert, which was in course of preparation, had to be abandoned. It was suggested that rather than disappoint the children who look forward with delight to this annual event —as do the Committee for financial assistance—that a floral fete, sale of work, and other novel items should take place in the old school. The suggestion came from the teaching stall and was accepted with pleasure by the committee. The date was fixed for Wednesday, December 21st, and the teaching staff lost no time in organising and carrying out the details. Messrs Jackson and Gabites presented a report which set forth the programme to be submitted. Stalls for the sale of sweets, produce, needlework, etc., will be provided, competitions will lake place in the grounds and a shooting gallery provided. A Christmas tree will not be overlooked. The parents of the children, besides promising to contribute refreshments, etc., have donated over £5 ' n cash. A sheep, lamb and pig have been given for weight - guessing competitions. Afternoon tea will be dispensed under capable supervision. The chairman, on behalf of the committee, expressed appreciation of the enthusiasm displayed by the staff and children. It. was decided to invite the Chairman of the Education Board to open the fete and present the prizes. The admission was fixed at is, children free. Mr Geo. Coley was appointed to take charge of the gates and doors with Messrs Alex. Speirs and McKnight as assistants. The band is to be asked to enliven the proceedings outside and Mr Betty’s orchestra will provide selections in the building. A list of ladies and gentlemen’s names were submitted as having consented to assist at the stalls, etc.
