CRICKET.
On the Park pitch yesterday afternoon the local cricketers scored their first win this season by defeating Himatangi by six wickets. Himatangi was without the serivices of Redgrave and could only muster ten men, whilst the local club had perhaps the strongest eleven they have put into the field this season. Himatangi batted first and were all disposed of for 57, of which Bethuue contributed 20. Of the local bowlers Howe was in good form, being responsible for the downfall of five of the visiting batsmen. He bowled a real good length all through and in his sixth over bowled four men thus accomplishing the coveted hat trick. The Foxtonians considered that as Himatangi had put up such a small total they had a win in sight on the first innings, but the batsmen failed miserably before the bowling of Bethuue and Wilton and the total score amounted to only 20. Bethune secured seven wickets for 17 runs. As it was still early in the afternoon it was decided to continue play and Himatangi again went to the wickets but did not make as good a stand as before, the innings closing for 35 runs. It was now almost six o’clock and in order to win it was absolutely necessary to force the batting. Robinson instructed his men to hit out and by this means the necessary number was secured for the loss of four wickets. During the afternoon the visitors were entertained at afternoon tea by the local team. The following are the scores. Himatangi.—lst Innings.
